With a grand technical perfection- master in watercolor, art form greatly appreciated in the nineteenth century - although he did his training in Catalonia, the years he spent in Rome made him evolve to the latter years of Fortuny and break away from the academic structure.

He had a large international impact, as the market, headed by Goupil, the dealer, wanted to consecrate him as a substitute for his countryman Fortuny, who had recently died, but his Roman roots were soon overtaken by the push of Paris.
